As shown in the figure above, any cue ball position between C and D will be a thinner shot with respect to a straight shot A. One can see there will be fewer shots in between C and D that will fall into a thinner shot. Cut out portions in shot positions between C and D are just hidden or not seen part of the object ball with respect to a full hit or straight in shot.
